Modern Necky Skeg System INFO

This page will cover the Modern Necky Skeg System, circa 2004-2017 for kayaks outfitted with an in-hull tracking fin skeg. For classic skeg systems (and a transitional system), circa 2003 and before please see the Classic Necky Skeg INFO Page.

NITI Skeg Wire (as seen above) has been discontinued by Johnson Watercraft. We are suggesting to substitute with the 7x7 Skeg Cable that is common on other kayak brands.

NITI Wire (assumed to be Nickel Titanium) was found in the skeg systems of modern Necky kayaks. It will not kink and bend like cable. It is a stiff, but flexible, heavy gauge wire, 76 inches long, 1/8 inch in diameter. This wire can bend (kink) or the ends can become misshapened. If your NITI Skeg Wire (part number 07.2859.0000) is still usable continue to use it. NECKSKEG

The original Skeg Blade was discontinued by Old Town Canoe, and supply ran out circa 2023-2024. TopKayaker has an Aftermarket Replacement Soulution. That Skeg Blade was used for modern Necky brand kayaks circa 2004-2017, (Necky part number 07.2779.0000) including the Chatham and Manitou series. Plastic construction with set screw, hole and slot for the NITI Wire. Blade is 13.5 inches long, 3.75 at widest. We are suggesting the 7x7 Skeg Cable with this blade. Use this link to see the Necky Skeg Diagram. See a Necky Skeg Repair Article. NECKSKEG

The Necky Replacement Skeg Control Knob fits modern Necky kayaks outfitted with an in-hull tracking fin skeg. Made of black plastic. A small set screw is embedded, a tiny Allen wrench is needed. Approximately 1.5 inches long. A through hole for skeg wire is molded in place. Part number: 07.2783.0000.

The Necky Polymide Skeg Cable Tube came as a section 8 feet long. It is best used as a tubing guide for NITI Wire skeg cables on Necky brand kayaks such as the Chatham. Tube OD is 1/4 inch. Part Number 01.1315.0330. Any 1/4 OD inch plastic tubing, with an ID that can accommodate the 7x7 Skeg Cable. can be used to retrofit as needed. Polymide Tube was secured to the hull with Presto-Lok Fittings. Use this link to see Necky Skeg Diagram.

The Necky brand Presto-Lok Fittings are no longer supplied by Old Town, but should be available trough other sources. These skeg tube fittings included a Prestolok Male connector (07.2664.0000) and brass locking nut (07.2663.0000). Use this link to see Necky Skeg Diagram.

NKY-07-2778-0000-KIT.jpgThe Necky Skeg Bracket Kit came with a stainless steel bracket (07.2778.0000), two rubber skeg washers (07.2849.0000), a 10-32 Ny-lock Nut (07.2116.0000) and a Number 10 Neoprene Bonded Washer (07.2847.0000). For use with plastic Necky Skeg Blade found on Necky brand kayaks such as the Chatham (assumed to fit both fiberglass and poly hulls) built about 2003 to 2017. Use this link to see Necky Skeg Diagram. This item is expected to be rather durable. We do not have a real solution for bracket replacement and it not expected to be in need of replacement. The washers however are expected to fail over time and should be replace during any major overhaul.

This page does not address the modern day touring and recreational Necky Rip Skeg System Parts.
